Tickets are now on sale for Other Desert Cities by Jon Robin Baitz, designed and directed for Kauai Community Players by Arnold Meister, opening Friday, February 14 and playing for three weekends, Fridays and Saturdays at 7pm and Sundays at 4pm at the Puhi Theatrical Warehouse. This play was performed on Broadway in 2011 and was a finalist for the 2012 Pulitzer Prize. Meister, well-known to Kauai audiences as a brilliant director, says “I saw Other Desert Cities on Broadway and, along with the critics, thought it to be one of the finest plays of recent years and knew I had to bring it to Kauai audiences.”
The action takes place on Christmas Eve at the Palm Springs home of Lyman and Polly Wyeth where the family has gathered. The action revolves around daughter Brooke’s announcement that she is about to publish a memoir dredging up a pivotal and tragic event in the family’s history, much to the distress of her parents. There is a long-held secret that Brooke does not know, which comes out over the course of the day. Meister has assembled a strong cast of Kauai actors. Featured in the production are Jennifer Downs (Brooke Wyeth), Ron Wood (Lyman Wyeth), Laurel Petterson-McGraw (Silda Grauman, Polly’s sister), Caleb Davis (Trip Wyeth, Polly & Lyman’s son) and Dottie Bekeart (Polly Wyeth).
